The Chamber of Commerce recognises that not everyone can find employment and indeed the actual process of applying for a job can leave a lot of people confused, frustrated and undervalued.
As part of Age Friendly Island the Chamber of Commerce provide exciting opportunities to support people over the age of 50 to start their own business.
The Chamber offers individuals or new businesses the opportunity to take their ideas from paper into practice, offering a free one-day business seminar aimed at people over 50 who are looking to start a business. The course includes business planning, how to network, and accessing finance. Providing the tools needed to take ideas from the drawing board to the real world.
The Chamber also offers a follow-up business mentoring service for 3 years tailored to suit the persons particular level of need and requirements. This can be conducted at the chamber offices or in the individuals’ workplace. The business mentors will look to formulate a joint business plan to help with the initial startup period and work through any business related concerns. The business mentor will also help with sign posting and help with planning and sourcing and development or increase employment capital.
The Chamber operates the Isle of Wight Lottery on behalf of the IOW Opportunity Society. Businesses that are looking to expand employment and or create employment and meet the criteria will be helped through the application and business planning process. They will have access to up to £25,000 interest-free loan over 3 years. Within this project, loans will be made available specifically for older people.
The Chamber will provide and source any additional business help and mentoring needed by an older person as part of an overall business support mechanism
