The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Olderpreneurs project supports older people on the Island by providing help and advice on starting a business or becoming self-employed. They offer a free one day business seminar and follow up business mentoring tailored to suit the needs of the individual.
As part of the process of supporting and mentoring people who wish to explore self-employment, they offer quarterly “network” sessions for them to get together and chat to others who are experiencing the same journey. The sessions are extremely informal, allowing everyone to catch up, share ideas and generally support each other. Self-employment in itself, especially when working from home, can be very isolating and lonely, these meet ups ensure people are keeping in contact with each other. The team of experienced business mentors facilitate and make sure everyone is happy, they are there to help and support answering any questions that need answering before the next mentoring meeting. This month they also had people from the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) who were there advise on tax and tax credits if needed.
